Dark Chocolate Coffee

Coffee and Dark Chocolate

The dark chocolate coffee combination has always been popular.  Dark chocolate and coffee share similar histories, and have always gone well together, in drink or in solid form.

London Coffee House c 1740

Coffee, chocolate (and tea) were introduced and popularized in Europe practically simultanesously during the 16th and 17th centuries, with coffee being introduced from African and Asia while chocolate was introduced from South America.  Like  chocolate houses, coffee houses attracted patrons for drink, conversation, entertainment, and compantionship.  The business of chocolate always had many similarities to the business of chocolate:  tropical plantations, roasting, grinding.  And, like chocolate, coffee was both originally touted for its medicinal properties and its health benefits have been rediscovered, if more scientificallly, in recent years.

As edible hard chocolate was invented in the mid-1800s, no equivalent step was taken with coffee.  But from this time, chocolate makers began experimenting with the addition of different additional flavors to their chocolate, including coffee.  Eating chocolate while drinking coffee, and eating chocolate containing coffee, have been very popular ever since.

Dark Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans

In addition to putting some coffee in your chocolate drink, or some chocolate in your coffee drink, dark chocolate and coffee are enjoyed together in two types of combined products:  dark chocolate covered coffee beans, and dark chocolate bars containing coffee.

Dark Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans

Dark chocolate covered coffee beans can be found in many combinations of chocolate and bean:  Sometimes with sugar free chocolate, or with chocolate or coffee beans from specific geographic locations, or grown by organic, or fairtrade methods.  You can find packages as small as 8 ounces, or as large as 15 pounds.
